![]() But this new version is the sort of film that makes you smile before literally ripping your face off, as happens to one unfortunate character later on. ![]() And before you go nuts, calm down, the original is one of my favorite movies of all time. What I’m getting at here, is that the new Child’s Play has a heart that the original didn’t. This is not your ugly, creepy Chucky doll from the 80s. There are even moments where my entire theater uttered “awe” at some of the sweeter, more comical moments with Chucky. Buddi is as real of a friend as an AI can get. In fact, if I had my own Buddi doll, it might come close to replacing my dog. So when Andy is given a Buddi doll which is “defective” like himself (Andy has a hearing aid), their growing bond is believable and charming. We get the idea that Andy has never been good at making friends, as his single mother, Karen ( Aubrey Plaza), is insistent he at least try this time around in their new place. By introducing an older, lonely Andy, the bond he forms with Chucky in the beginning is much more heartwarming, and ultimately, tragic. Andy loves his new doll, Chucky, at first, but soon, Chucky takes the idea of friendship a little too far, deciding that no one can be friends with Andy but him.Īs you can already tell, the scenario here is quite a bit different from the original Child’s Play. After a somewhat goofy set-up for our evil Buddi doll (voiced by Mark Hamill), a new toy with an advanced AI that can connect to other Kaslan products, we find the doll in the hands of Andy ( Gabriel Bateman), a 13-year old kid without any friends. In this new Child’s Play, directed by Lars Klevberg ( Polaroid) and written by Tyler Burton Smith, we’re introduced to the Kaslan company, an Apple-esque conglomerate that produces loads of smart-home devices, such as TVs, phones, and, of course, toys. Which is exactly what a remake should be. Kitsos and Consiglio are both represented by The Characters Talent Agency.…One reason this remake works? It’s a huge departure from Tom Holland and Don Mancini’s original. Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson are executive producing. The film is produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith under their KatzSmith Productions banner ( It, It: Chapter 2). Klevberg directs from Tyler Burton Smith’s ( Kung Fury) screenplay based on the original movie. The cast also includes Beatrice Kitsos (FOX’s “The Exorcist”), Ty Consiglio ( Wonder) and Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”). You’ll also find Buddi wallpapers (below) and more goodies over on the site.Ĭhild’s Play follows a mother (Aubrey Plaza) who gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. Over on, you can learn all about the Buddi dolls, which come equipped with a “highly intricate cloud-backed voice recognition engine capable of identifying speech,” as well as “20 sensors and cameras which provide detailed realtime information about its environment.” Buddi comes equipped to fluently converse in both English and Spanish. The classic “Good Guys” doll gets an upgrade in next year’s Child’s Play remake from MGM and Orion, now known as “Buddi” (but don’t worry, the killer doll is still named Chucky).įrom what we’ve heard, one of the Buddi dolls will essentially get hacked to become a killing machine (no Charles Lee Ray or Brad Dourif in this one), and a new website for the film that was just launched previews the high-tech new Buddi doll that becomes the new Chucky.
